FRED GARRETT AND MAURICE RANDALL each won 15 lap Mini Thunder Car features in the rain Labor Day at the Mottville Speedway!

For the 2nd day in a row it rained the entire race time and but for the 2nd day in a row the drivers responded with great racing! In the first MTC feature Garrett and Randall raced side by side for the final lap with Garrett taking the win in a near photo finish! Tony Vitali was 3rd and Mike Guthrie 4th. In the 2nd feature it was Randall winning his first feature of the season over Vitali and Guthrie.

Garrett won the dash over Vitali and Richard Allbee. Randall won a close heat over Garrett and Vitali and Garrett won the 2nd heat over Vitali and Guthrie.

Garrett moved to 2nd in the season point standings while Vitali moved to 6th and Guthrie 7th.

Eric Root won his 13th Mini Stock feature of the season with a 12 lap victory over Glenna Sargent, who won the heat.

Robert Sutton won his 14th Street Stock feature of the season with a 12 lap victory over Larry Saunders and results were the same in the heat.

Tony Eldridge won both Bomber 15 lap features and the both heats.

Everyone is hoping for much drier weather this coming week-end when the ladies run a powder puff on Saturday night and the Pro Stocks run their season championship on Sunday night.

On the way to the track this afternoon I was fairly sure this was one time we would not get the races in! It was raining steadily all day but when I got to the track we had 10 drivers ready to race despite the rain! So we took a few minutes to ponder how we could do it! We also had about 10 fans anxious to see the race!

It was trophy night, triple points and bonus points night too boot! So for the 2nd night in a row we simply ran in the rain! Again my thanks to the 10 drivers and the 10 fans and our great track staff for getting it done again!

In fact, Randall at pay-off thanked us for running when no other track would! To do this we had to have a reduced pay-off which I really hate but had no choice. But everyone seemed to have a great time and enjoyed the trophies and all drivers received some pay!

Sutton purchased 4 more of those Good Years tires and they must be great rain tires as he won features both Sunday and Monday!

I want to wish a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY to two of our staff members-THE WORLD FAMOUS FLAG LADY RITA COURTNEY whose birthday is Wednesday and our EMT-Security-concession helper, 50/50 drawing person-SHELLY LAUDERDALE whose birthday is Saturday! Shelly even admits to being 37 next Saturday but she certainly is very well preserved! Both do a fantastic job at the track and in handling this web site!

As bad as this week-end was for us, it was in some respects even worse for several other area tracks who had really big races scheduled including season championship or the 2nd day of two day shows, etc! They had in some cases, very heavy advertising losses! Unfortunately that has been typical of this season for about every track in our area I am aware of. Crowds are down and bottom lines are way, way down! I have said this before but I will say it again-you will see changes at most of the tracks for 2004 because no track can lose money indefinitely!

We have been helped by our low operating expense-by far and away the lowest of any track anywhere I am certain. But even in our case we had to cut one staff member this week-end. But I am hoping we have learned some things from this season that will help us in 2004. One thing I am fairly certain of is that most past seasons including this one we have tried to run at least one class where we simply could not be competitive. Years ago it was late models and this season it was Pro Stocks. Despite cutting them down to Sundays only and a short season the car count only got worse, not better! So for 2004 no Pro Stocks and whatever we run it will be classes where we can be competitive. Not the highest pay-off around , for certain, but in the neighborhood. With our track being a far safer track than most and far less expensive to run, a pay-off that is in the neighborhood of the other tracks in our area should be a good deal for many drivers!

MTC are finally getting established as a supporting class for us and this was critical for the future. About the only change for 2004 will be allowing 6 cylinders to join the class and starting a $400 claimer so that the costs of the class remain low and perhaps even lower than now!

MS seem on the rise and I do not foresee any rule changes for them. SS is the class where we have to figure out what we can do to lower the cost of racing for them. I am very open for suggestions for lowering the cost of street stock racing.

Anyway the final triple header week-end of the racing season is now over! I am truly grateful to all the drivers, fans and staff who made sure we got all 3 nights in and I hope we never again have this much rain on Labor Day week-end or any other racing week-end for that matter!
