Another
exciting week-end of racing action at the Mottville Speedway this past week-end
as we passed the 1/3 mark of the season! What a relief it was to have close,
exciting racing and no real big problems after a week ago!
Saturday
night’s MS feature of 35 lap was really one of the very best ever! With less
than 2 laps to go Eric Goff, Rod Roberts and David Schaefer were running 3 wide
for the lead! It really does not get any better than that! IN SS Randy Morley
just managed to beat Ryan Prough and that was it! The kart feature was close and
thrilling with Shawn Forsyth taking home a very close and hard fought victory!
Rookie Nathan Aumack won his 2nd MTC feature of the season and Doug
Gage won an exciting TC feature! All great features!
Car
count was very good: 9 MS, 9 combined SS-Bombers, 10 TC, 5 MTC, 8 karts and 7 VM
for a total of 48! The MS ran for a feature pay-off of $100-75-60-50-40-30-25
while the SS went for $125-85-65-50-40. Those karts are about to give me a heart
attack when they run 4 wide for the lead! Wow!
I
was sure Sunday the car count would be down with Father’s Day and the heat but
we came back with 33 of our own stock cars and 3 karts! Very good crowd to boot!
I do believe John Yoder had the best week-end of his career!
John
purchased 2 Good Years Friday and won 2 dashes and a B feature! He was sure
happy when he left Sunday night! Randy Morley pulled off an upset I had to see
to actually believe when he won the SS feature over Ron Hughson, Jr.! Amazing!
Ron said the sun was in his eyes! Then we have Bill Crapo actually hitting the
front stretch wall twice and winning the Bomber feature! Bill is now only 27
points out of first place in the Bomber division!
Hall
of Famer Eldon Schrader came to Mottville Sunday for the first time this season
with a Bomber but broke hot lapping! Major bummer as I was anxious to see him
run again! Hopefully we will be back soon!
Fred
Garret won an exciting TC feature for
the first time this season! Fred has paid his dues and a feature win for
him was certainly deserved! Yes, his tires have been checked and the driver who
filed the complaint did the checking and admits they are legal!
It
was also good to see young David Wayne win his first ever feature after earlier
taking his first ever checker in the kart dash!
Out
of the clear blue Saturday night we had our biggest concession sales of the
season! People must have come to the track hungry and thirsty! Sunday Gerald
“polk” Wilbur installed two air conditioners I had purchased Friday in the
main concession stand! Many thanks to Polk for his work and we now have the only
air conditioned concession stand in the area that I know of anyway! By the way,
one thing people who buy a race track or are considering buying a race track or
just complaining that owners make too much money, always underestimate is
“behind the scenes” expenses such as maintenance and new items like air
conditioners! Just for a smaller operation like Mottville we spend over $10,000
per year in these items and that is with a great deal of volunteer help!
Read
in a racing column recently a complaint about some tracks starting too many cars
in features and it ends up with a lot of wrecked cars! I agree with that part
but reject the suggestion that the reason is to make more money for the
promoters! The reason so few people in racing are making any money in all, in
fact most are losing and losing big time, is because racing has become far, far
too expensive! At Mottville we are bucking that trend! Do not believe we tore up
a single SS Sunday and with only 6 cars still paid a feature pay-off of
$100-75-50-35 to those finishing! With 9 MS we paid the feature
100-75-60-50-40-35-30-25.
I
had a call Sunday about so called “tow”! I guess some tracks pay a “tow”
which I have never really understood but it seems some drivers care more about
this “tow” than anything else! If you call before coming and want a
guaranteed “tow” I have to imagine that you are planning on breaking before
the feature! I have noticed that at tracks who do pay this “tow” it’s the
same cars over and over and over breaking before feature time! It’s the same
reason I have decided high “start pay” is not a good idea! I have heard so
many drivers bragged about running one lap and getting $100 to start a LM
feature! At Mottville when we used to pay $50 to start the LM feature I would be
paying those $50 bills to the same drivers each night who run only 1-5 laps and
went to the pits! If someone runs regularly with us and breaks on occasion I
will gladly pay them their pit pass back with no problem! But beyond that I have
no use for “tow”.
Paul
Scott had engine problems again this week-end with his number 59 SS but said he
will have a original and repaired engine back in for this week-end! SS Rookie
Jeff Brundt had to go to a funeral Sunday but said he will be back this
week-end! Melissa Worthington, defending Bomber points champion, says she will
definitely have her Bomber car back this week-end! Wayne Kline bought 4 Good Years
for his granddaughter Jamie’s MS and Terry told me she should have a running
at least the week-end before the big July 11 show!
Speaking
of the July 11 show we are getting a lot of positive reaction! Should be a good
car count! Remember it is TRIPLE POINTS for all 4 divisions running! Had several
SS drivers complained to me because they were not running that night which
amazed me since I figured they would not want to run during the week for two
weeks in a row but I am glad to see they are interested and with that in mind
for the future!
I
have always wanted to run a Wednesday night race for extra money and thanks to
Holle’s Auto Salvage and Connor’s Auto Salvage and Towing we are finally
doing it!
By
the way, has anybody seen Warren Sprague? Or Robert Sprague?
We
have now passed 10,000 hits on our web site in less than one year! That is an
average of 200 hits per week including the off season! Wow! Never ever dreamed
it would ever be this big and from the emails I get every week I can tell people
are most serious about it! David Schaefer has really done a great job on this!
I
ordered trophies for the month of July today and we have 12 dates in July! 3 of
those dates are complete trophy nights! So for the month of July I had to order
200 trophies! For July 3 and 4 we are giving out the “American Flag”
trophies which are very popular and for Mid-Season Championship on July 15 the
always popular picture plagues. Some people may not be aware that the dash
winner in all divisions each night receives a trophy and TC and MTC and kart
heat winners receive a trophy plus the kart feature winner and any “B”
feature winners each night so over the course of a full season we certainly give
out a lot of trophies! NO wonder the trophy shop likes me so much!
The
Vintage Mods felt so bad about the double booking on June 9 that they added July
7 to the schedule to make up for it! Sure hope this organization can work out
their problems and get together again and I for one really enjoy their cars!
Well
you never ever know what will be happening from night to night at Mottville and
that is why I love it! Hope to see everyone this Saturday and Sunday for our 27th
and 28th points nights of the season!
