Bill Crapo is our 2001 Bomber points champion! The decision was made Saturday to end the Bomber division on Sunday with the Mid-Season Championship. This was a logical time to do it and running 3-5 Bomber cars in a separate division was not only unprofitable for the track but that number of cars could not put on a good show for the fans. We, of course, appreciate those few drivers who did support the Bomber class and for Sunday we gave them points both in the Bomber division and Street Stock division. We will not charge them a registration fee to run Street Stocks.
It appears that what happened was our Street Stock class grew much faster than we could ever have even dreamed and our Thunder Car class was our big car budget class, leaving very little for Bombers.
Speaking of Street Stocks we had a season high 15 on Sunday! Absolutely unreal! At the start of this season I was hoping for maybe 6-8 max of Street Stocks per night! Now we are running about 8-11 per night!! I seriously doubt we can keep 15 Street Stock drivers happy but I think maybe we can keep 10-12 happy! Anyway Sunday we ran two SS heats for the first
time this season and for the first time this season ran a SS B feature. We locked in 7 cars in the A feature and then run 8 in the B , giving plaques to the top 3 and transferring the top 5 to the A. Holding the A feature to 12 cars made for a much safer race! Scott Baker's easy win over Ron Hughson, Jr. was truly a major upset and Hughson told me he would be at the track Thursday to buy tires! Joe Lambright, Cindy's son, was at the track in a SS for the first time this season and had transmission trouble and leaked fluid all over the track during the first SS heat. We had a ton of help from drivers in cleaning it up and it was greatly appreciated.
Despite his bad luck Joe said he had a good time at Mottville and planned to return regularly which is very good news!
Cindy Lambright paced all the races Sunday night in her 1980 Corvette T top and it was nice! She loved and will be back from time to time to do it again! Thanks Cindy!
I don't know it if was due to the heat or vacations or lack of money or all 3 but our numbers were down Saturday big time! We had only 20 of our own stock cars but had 9 karts and 6 Vintage Mods which helped. Also our crowd in the bleachers was one of our best this season! Now I wished that crowd would
have been there Sunday when we had 32 of our stock cars! Think the extreme heat and humidity hurt the crowd Sunday but the racing was really good! I was at another track Friday night and their numbers seemed down so I expected ours to be also and they were. WE had a lot of regulars gone on Saturday including Bill Crapo, Jean Behlke (gone Sunday also and fell from 2nd to 5th in point standings since she missed Wednesday also! Three in row for misses will kill you!), of course with Jean gone Tod and Andrew Behlke with their karts were gone and Tom Koehler and his kart. Still we had 9 karts without these 3! Ray Simpson Jr. was gone Saturday and returned Sunday with the MS but not with the Bomber, which is being redone to be a most competitive SS! Paul Scott is rebuilding his car and was gone both days also. Melissa Worthington was gone Saturday but returned Sunday with both the TC and Bomber. Ryan Prough and Joe Reaume were both gone both days and we expected Reaume to be there Sunday as he was at hot laps Thursday and had a new car and purchased two tires! WE also had a SS register Thursday and he said he planned on being with us Saturday but he never made it either! So just one of those things I guess! For the past several season our number one class in terms of car count has been the Mottville Stocks! This year the SS have gradually taken over! For some reason the MS class has actually declined in numbers! IN fact if it were not for the Schaefers(3) and Yoders(2) we might not even have the class! Bob Teadt comes on Sunday and David Fugate about every other Saturday and Eric Goff once in a while and Barry Harrison has had major troubles this season!
The amazing thing is that on Saturday nights who wins the MS feature is really wide open! Many different winners and no clear favorite on Saturday night! The Min Thunder Car class, just started this season, is now at a steady 6 and looks promising to get to 8-10 soon but the Thunder Car Class, now almost one year old, has taken a turn backwards! We had reached 8-11 per night but had only 3 Saturday and 4 Sunday! Some people out there are really missing the boat on this one because if you want a low cost fun class of driving this is it! I am confident the numbers will pick up soon!
WE are also seeing a lot different feature winners in the TC class so there is no clear favorite here any night! NO doubt considering the state of the economy in 2001 the Mottville Speedway is ideally suited for the future! We are the only track in the area running MTC and we had TC so we have not one but two very economical classes of racing! When money gets tight people cut back and running an expensive stock car may be something many have to give up! I have never felt better about the future of the Mottville Speedway than I do now! With our low operating costs and economy racing and long schedule we are looking great!
Hope to see all of you this Saturday and Sunday night when we start the 2nd half of the 2001 season!
