David Fugate was simply awesome this wee-end! Saturday night he took the 25
lap MS feature against heavy comp from Eric Goff and Jason Schaefer and Sunday he came from the tail in the 20 lapper on lap 14 and won again! Both
times as the car sat at the start-finish line for inspection it was boiling over and you had to wonder how many more laps David could have ran! He told
me he thinks it has a cracked head!
We were most fortunate this week-end at Mottville! The reports I have been receiving from other tracks in the area indicate
attendance down by as much as half the last two weeks! Probably hot and humid weather the most at
blame but our crowds both Saturday and Sunday at Mottville were above average! On the other hand car count and pit count were
down. Still a decent week-end on what could have been a horrible one! Jeff Brunt solved his heating problem but had
handling problems on Saturday night. He moved some tires around and got the problem solved and looked
very very good on Sunday in wining the SS feature and dash! He should move
into 2nd in points in the next 2-3 weeks!
TC car count got up to 7 Sunday so it is finally going in the right direction again! Tom
Waddell had his 1990 Lincoln Mark VII both nights and it is a beautiful black car! Running wise not figured out yet but it takes
time! Randy Morley won the TC feature both nights and he certainly has the Chris Arnett # 26 running right along now! Doug Gage returned Sunday and
was 2nd and told me he would be back Saturday night!
IN the MTC at times Fred Garrett looks unbeatable but when we run the cars the wrong way around the track he can not quite beat young Nathan Aumack who won features 11 and 12 this week-end and should very soon take over the points lead! We had 7 MTC Saturday night and hope to hit 10 before long! TC and MTC are the economical way to go in racing!
Andrew Behlke and Greg Brown put on a great show in the kart feature Saturday night with Behlke taking the win but Brown gave him everything he could handle! Andrew came back and won again on Sunday! Adam Steglich was back for the 2nd time Sunday and looked much improved!
The Vintage Modifieds
had their biggest field of the season to date Saturday-10 cars. It was their 7th night at racing at
Mottville in 2001. Wish I could say they put on a great show but one car came out for the
feature and took the green and promptly exited the track and on the first lap two more crashed and were done! Financially the VM's have cost us a
pretty bundle this season as they are not bringing in many fans or people in the pits! After all these years of supporting them when they got started
this is sad but is reality and their future at Mottville is very much in doubt!
The question is often asked does the tremendous success of NASCAR help or
hurt the short tracks? At best it does not help them I would say. Every time MIS runs a NASCAR show I can
see it from our crowd being down at Mottville! Sunday Jason and Wesley Schaefer were both at the Brickyard and not running
at Mottville so I can say for certain it cost us at least two cars!
Called David Schaefer's wife this morning to check on David! I was told he left the track Sunday afternoon very, very ill and several people were most concerned about him! She told me she thinks he had the 24 hour flu which he contacted from his grandchildren! But he went to work Monday so that is good news! A few minutes after I hung up the phone Randy Morley called to see if I knew anything! So David you do have a lot of friends at Mottville!
This was a most, most stressful week-end for our staff at Mottville!
They handled it well and I am proud of each and every one of them! WELL
DONE!
Last Thursday we had a new TC for hot laps and the a bunch of people, brand new to racing, with it! They indicated they might well soon have 3-4 TC
racing at Mottville! I hope so! Great way to get started in racing!
Talk about the power of the internet! Last week in this column I said we
needed someone to mow grass and drive the safety truck. Well Thursday George Davis was hired after reading it! He is off to a fine start! Welcome
aboard George!
Regular shows both Saturday and Sunday this week and I am really looking forward
to them! Before you know it this heat and humidity will be replaced by cold and snow and I do not like that! I am thinking about possibly going
on a cruise in December or maybe even Hawaii. But until then I fully intend
to enjoy each and every week-end of racing at the
Mottville Speedway where
there is no place quite like it!
