Merry Christmas to all and best wishes for a safe and successful and blessed New Year from the management of the Mottville Speedway!
Some most interesting calls this week! First a driver, who shall remain nameless, called me and complained that other drivers were getting more points during the year by running "B" features and the extra heat when he was not placed in those events! I explained to him that we do not give points for the extra heat at all and the only way a driver receives any points for the "B" feature is if he fails to start the "A" feature and even then the points for the "B" feature are no more than starting points for the "A"! Typical race track deal, other drivers told him I was not starting him in the "B" and extra heat so that he would lose points! I told him that when he has a question, ask the "head Fred" and get it correct. But, really I do appreciate his calling me, even at this late date, because now he knows the truth!
Also had a question this week about points money. You need to run 56 of the 70 nights to get points money and you must attend the banquet on February 10, 2001. After David T. Schaefer, Randy Morley, Melissa Worthington, and Wesley Schaefer the next highest number of nights was 47, 9 short of the required 56! I might well bend one or two or even at the most 3 nights, but not 9!
Tina Garrison, ace reporter for the Elkhart Truth, called me this week and is preparing her article for the wrap-up of our season for publication this week. We had a long and good conversation and she is planning on coming to the banquet and will have a story about the banquet in the paper. She also told me her husband is switching from 4 cylinder to Street Stock in 2001 and might well race a few nights with us early in the season! Tina has done a great job of covering the local racing scene and we appreciate her efforts.
Interesting enough she asked me about running the Vintage Modifieds in 2001 and I told her nothing had been set but we hoped to run them even more next season then we did last season! Well wouldn't you just know it, the very next phone call was from a Vintage Modified driver who then told me that the group plans on charging almost double the purse for next season over what we paid them last season! Seems one area track paid them that this past season and now they want all tracks to pay them that! If this is correct, it means Mottville Speedway will not have the Vintage Modifieds in 2001, because we could never ever afford that purse! But, if it is true, I certainly wish the Vintage Modifieds organization the best of luck and we enjoyed having them over the years at the Mottville Speedway! For a small operation, which we like being small, it is very difficult to book outside shows because of the expense. Basically an outside show has to bring in at least as much as we pay them. It's that simple and I keep records on this and only on very rare times has outside shows ever paid for themselves at Mottville!
I had a call from an asphalt Winged Sprint group which wanted dates. Turns out the purse was around $6250 for 20 cars! Almost guaranteed that I would lose $5000! I personally love asphalt winged sprints, but not so much I want to lose $5000!
Speaking of money, our top earnings winner in 2000 made $5980 on his 1099 form! Not bad at all for a small time operation! 4 other drivers made over $4000! 8 others made from $2500-$3500! 7 more made from $1200 to $2000! In total 50 drivers made over $600 and were sent 1099 forms.
Talked to Paul Scott from Conner's Towing this week and he seems sure he can get the driveway plowed out from US 12 to the pits and an area in the pits for the cars to park. So we look good for the Mottville Madness #5 on January 6, 2001.
Sold some more banquet tickets this week and it's looking more and more like a record high!
STAY WARM !!!!!
